Overview
On 28 March 2025, two earthquakes struck central Myanmar, causing widespread destruction and thousands of deaths. The earthquakes severely damaged homes and critical infrastructure, worsening an already severe humanitarian crisis. Since the 2021 military takeover, escalating armed conflict, political instability, and economic collapse have pushed nearly 20 million people (over one-third of the population) into urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
The political and security situation in Myanmar has presented significant challenges for aid actors. Ongoing threats to civil society and humanitarian workers are compounded by severe operational restrictions. There are widespread reports of bureaucratic hurdles, denied access to affected areas, and aid diversion.
Access challenges are further intensified by an information blackout. Internet shutdowns and mobile network restrictions, especially in resistance-controlled zones, have crippled communication and coordination. The exclusion of foreign journalists and international observers makes independent verification of the situation on the ground nearly impossible.
People in Myanmar are organising themselves in various forms to support each other and their communities in meeting their ongoing needs.
Our work
Ground Truth Solutions (GTS), with support from the H2H Network, is working to understand the priorities and lived experiences of communities in Myanmar. A central focus of the project is to learn from and about mutual aid efforts; how communities are organising to support each other given the limited formal humanitarian access. By sharing what communities say about the support they receive, the challenges they face, and the role of local efforts, we aim to contribute to a more effective and accountable humanitarian response in Myanmar.
